Thoughts From the Crypt

The Evil Dead is the greatest cinematic masterpiece ever put to celluloid and I will die on that blood-soaked hill!

Look, I get it. Everyone’s got their horror darling. The Exorcist scared your mom out of Catholicism. Hereditary gave you PTSD from a telephone pole. Cool.

But The Evil Dead? That film is pure, uncut madness—an unhinged love letter to DIY horror, written in gore, sweat, and 16mm duct tape. It is chaotic. It is ridiculous. And it is perfect.

Let’s just start with the facts:

  • It was made for peanuts. Like, actual peanuts and probably someone’s lawnmower.
  • It doesn’t pull its punches. It throws them—through a window, into a tree, and back again.
  • The camera work? That janky, possessed, howling, tree-hopping cam? It’s not just a gimmick—it’s a character. One that says: “You are not safe. And also, you might barf.”
  • Using SAG members on an unsanctioned film so they had to be credited under pseudonyms? Guerilla tactics if I ever saw ’em!
  • It spawned one of the most legendary franchises in horror history, spanning from the dreadful, RESTARTING the franchise with part 2 (a little more campy this time), pivoting to straight comedy for part 3 (and not even using the Evil Dead brand name for that one!) followed by a requel, a sequel to the requel and three seasons of a series staring Bruce, Lucy Lawless and Lee Majors
  • And that chin!

The Evil Dead is a masterpiece and no one will tell me otherwise.
